“From Inner to Outer Shadow” was initiated by Brigitte Kowanz, who was fascinated by the exceptional architecture and location of the Palais Yeniköy, when visiting in 2012. The Austrian Cultural Forum’s drawn-out and highly structured exhibition area in the palais in Istanbul, with openings at both ends turns into the central field of action. The table, serving as place of exchange, of work, of social activity and of sensuality forms the mental benchmark. The with- and next to each other, the intermediate spaces and transitions were made the focus, the heterogenic projections of the artists involved and who worked on this project for more than a year were turned into a creative area of tension: A question is being asked, but something completely different and unexpected comes to life.

Next to the initiator Brigitte Kowanz also Eva Chytilek, Nikolaus Gansterer, Isabella Kohlhuber, Peter Kozek, Krüger&Pardeller, Alexander Martinz, Wolfgang Obermair, Niki Passath, Franz Schubert and Anna Zwingl contribute to this group exhibition of lecturers of the department of trans medial art of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, which is only the second exhibition of its kind, as usually exhibitions by them are organised together with and for their students.

For the opening Niki Passath, Peter Kozek, Nikolaus Gansterer and Alexander Martinz give performances, which directly relate to the exhibition: Various objects on a table communicate with each other and the artist (Nikolaus Gansterer); Two robots take on a quest to gain knowledge and experience (Niki Passath); A car completely veiled, but for a diminutive spyhole invites to an adventure within the unknown interior of the vehicle (Peter Kozek); A prepared piano turns the visitors into the protagonists of a genre film within the blink of an eye (Alexander Martinz). “From Inner to Outer Shadow” can be visited Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 – 16:00 at the Austrian Cultural Forum Istanbul until 19 February 2015.

Performer: Fernando Mesquita

A kinetic head construction is slowly starting to spin. The rotation of the camouflage textile is transforming the butt cone shape to a wavy parasol. By lifting up it gives a clear view to the face of the protagonist, that seems to refuse — even after his disclosure — communication with the viewer. Only by speeding up the pattern the regularity of its structure is shown. The movement itself is like a film within a film that entails a spatialization of the ornament and a deconstruction of the camouflage.
In front of a garden-like scenery “Out of Sight” is representing an ambivalent sequence between visible and invisible, between presence and deprivation. The scene resembles an excerpt of a dystopic movie, which entire plot remains unknown.
